The last film I watched by Gus Van Sant was “Elephant” (back in 2009), which I gave 5 out of 10 for as I thought it was pointless. I suspect though that I was not in the right frame of mind at the time to watch a Gus film.
But, I did get into this 2007 Gus film about a skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard. It was rather slow paced and just seemed to be following a teenage boy as he goes about his daily business while trying to figure out what to do about a dead security guard on his conscience. The first half of the film was filmed out of sequence which all came together in the scene where the security guard dies (in a rather gruesome fashion), and from then on things start making sense.
It felt like an experimental film most of the time with occasional weird film effects, and random glitchy sounds. The story, while slow-moving at first, became quite gripping as it went on.
The acting was superbness, especially from the main actor who originally just wanted to be a skateboarding extra in the film. His name is Gabe Nevins and he looks a lot like a younger Ollie from “Bring Me the Horizon” don’t you think?
Taylor Momsen, who went on to form a hard rock band called called The Pretty Reckless, played the girlfriend. She was pretty good.
So, I liked this Gus film, perhaps I should watch Elephant again to see if I like it better second time around.
