Lonnie Donegan

John Peel got me onto Lonnie (he was quite massive in England before The Beatles came along), specifically just one song, Frankie & Johnny, I’m reading Peel’s autobiography, Margrave of the Marshes (sadly he died before completing it, being finished off by his family), and he mentions Lonnie and how he plays this one tune to people who are subsequently blown away by it. Jack White was so impressed he said ‘Remember, Lonnie Donegan started it for you.’ as he collected an award at the Brits a while back.

Anyway, I had to find this song, so after having a listen on YouTube I decided it had to be in my collection as it’s an absolute corker, I could bought the song for $2.19 or I could get 100 Classic Lonnie songs for $9.99. I’ve not listened to the other 99 as yet but Frankie & Johnny has been played a fair few times now.

Album Count 2017: 50
