After reading Paul’s review for this recently I thought I would watch it too, I felt a dumb action buddy film was in order after all of the noir films I have been watching recently.
And it was pretty fun stuff, and more violent than I was expecting. Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington were a good pairing, both seeming to be having good fun, and Bill Paxton was great as a nasty Black Ops agent. Edward James Olmos played a Mexican drug lord, and it wasn’t until I read up on Wikipedia about this film that I realised it was him… he has changed quite a bit since Bladerunner, but haven’t we all?
There were a few twists and turns to keep the story interesting, a few shoot-outs, the usual implausible situations, baddies that can’t shoot straight, the obligatory car chase or two, and plenty of snappy buddy talk. The dialogue was funny at times, and didn’t switch too heavily from comedy to drama as some action films do (Beverly Hills Cop 3 I remember was guilty of switching from light comedy to drama just a bit too jarringly).
Denzel Washington had not made a comedy since The Preacher’s Wife in 1996 (this film was made in 2013), which is a pity as he does comedy well. Mark Wahlberg does both action and comedy well. I was reading about him on Wikipedia, he was quite the criminal in his early days, in fact three of his brothers and a sister were too.
Good dumb violent funny fun.
