He Walked by Night
This film is described on Wikipedia as a “police procedural film”, which describes it perfectly.
It is based on the true story of an ex-police worker and war veteran who goes on a crime spree in 1945-46, and the coppers who are tracking him down with sleuthing and science. They of course catch their man and plug him full of holes.
It is quite well done, and just gets down to business with no mucking about, that is something I like about old films. No silly side stories about a cop’s teenage son doing drugs, or the struggle of a cop to come to terms with the death of his buddy who was killed in a shootout several years ago and not being able to use his gun which he finally does to save his new partner in the last shootout scene. None of that.
There was good acting, some scenes were well shot, and the lighting in some shots was superbness. Good stuff.
