This is a film based on the autobiography of the real Sonny Carson, a civil rights activist.
It is basically about the young Sonny joining a gang, and later in his adult life being imprisoned for robbery, then leaving prison to find that most of his former gang members have died from drugs.
The budget for this was small, Wikipedia says the director used all kinds of shortcuts to get the film made cheaply, but it worked well. The acting was good, especially by the lead actor.
This is not an uplifting film at all, except maybe at the end when Sonny walks off into the distance to an uncertain future (the real Sonny went on to fight the drug trade, and get involved in New York politics).
Not essential viewing, but decent enough.
