This was on my YouTube “To Watch” list for some time, I put it on there because I wanted to see another Dirk Bogarde (his full name was Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde don’t you know?) film.
Also starring in this were Susannah York and John Gielgud, with a cameo by Donald Sutherland as the token American. So the acting was superb British 1960’s and Donald acting.
The star of this film though was 1968 London, a real swinging town obviously, and with fashions that make today’s stuff look rather pathetic. There was one scene were Susannah goes into a women’s clothing boutique and there were plenty of models romping around in various ultra-hip threads that were totally happening.
The story was a bit of a Frankenstory. At first it was playing out as a code-breaking thriller at some British government organisation that hired only brainy and fashionable women to all crunch codes from the Ruskies, which they did with aplomb.
However, it soon transmogrified into a romance with the code breaking taking a back seat until the end where they blended in a Sputnik code-breaking story in with the conclusion of the romance story. It worked well though.
So all in all it was a good film, something different, and swinging London made it even better.
