Black Christmas

This is a 1974 horror film made in Canada, and starring a few well known faces including Margot Kidder, John Saxon, and Keir Dullea who played David Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey (he is 80 now, but is still doing the odd film).

I was expecting cheap 70’s thrills with this one, but it was actually quite good. It was an influential film too, basically starting the whole slasher genre, and inspired the Friday the 13th and Halloween directors.

It is not really a slasher though, you don’t see any slashing, and very little blood. We also never see the killers face, mostly just POV shots. But it is the creepy and very well done telephone calls he makes that makes this chilling.

The acting too is very good, especially Margot Kidder (she is Canadian/American) and Olivia Hussey. There was also a dopey police officer who was fun, as well as John Saxon who played a detective.
