James and I went to the cinema today to see this, along with Daigoro who is also a big Star Wars fan.
It pretty much met my expectations, but did not exceed them. It very much had the spirit of Episodes 4 and 5, and on my list is only just a tad behind them.
Episodes 1, 2, and 3 should be stricken from the record in my opinion, or have re-writes and be remade.
There is one problem with going to a cinema in Japan. The audience go dead quiet when the trailers start, and remain that way right up to when the credits end (no one left during the credits, although I did see one guy leave then come back, probably a loo visit). During some of the pretty damn exciting scenes there were no cheers or gasps, and no one laughed at some of the well done jokes. So it was not much of a cinema experience in that way. But it was great to see it on the big screen. The Japanese subtitles though were huge, very annoying at times.
There will definitely be a Everything Wrong with The Force Awakens video on YouTube soon, this had quite a few plot holes and quirks. But no film can escape nitpicking.
The hyper-hype over this was justified.
