This is possibly the third time I have seen this, and before watching it last night I knew it was not going to be so good. The only reason I watch it again is because it has Pythons in it, as well as Marty Feldman, Spike Milligan, and a few other of the best British comedians ever.
Spike was in it for only one scene, but he was darn funny, he didn’t even have to speak to make me laugh. The rest of it though was patchy, mostly a bit dull. There were a lot of funny scenes, but not enough, and at times it went just a little bit too serious. Madeline Kahn, a fave comedian of mine, was as funny as ever.
Graham Chapman was fun to watch as Yellowbeard, he had this crazy and frenzied look on his face the whole time. I was reading on Wikipedia that Keith Moon was initially involved in funding the film and wanted to play Yellowbeard, but he had to drop out due to health problems. I imagine he would have been just as crazy and frenzied as Graham Chapman, but I think Graham was the right choice in the end.
Marty Feldman died just before filmed finished. Since then others actors in this have passed away: Madeline Kahn, James Mason, Peter Cook, Peter Boyle, Kenneth Mars, Peter Bull (he played Queen Anne, very funny), and of course Graham Chapman and Spike Milligan. There was a cameo from David Bowie. Nigel Planer was in this too.
It is just a pity it didn’t really work out well, it could have been so much better.
