I have been wanting to see this for a long time and finally watched it last night.
The story is about British soldiers in a Japanese P.O.W. camp on Java, and the relationships between them and their captors. It got a bit slow in places and was two hours long, but overall it was a good watch.
It had Tom Conti in the main role and I thought he was very good, as were David Bowie, Ryuichi Sakamoto (also providing the soundtrack), and Takeshi Kitano (just called “Takeshi” in the credits).
It was filmed in Raratonga, the Cook Islands, and New Zealand, which explains the Kiwi accents some of the lesser actors had.
Not a great film, but still very well worth a watch.
