Inland Empire

I first tried to watch this about two years ago. The DVD had a scratch so I couldn’t finish watching it only a quarter of the way through.

I tried again a few months ago but got bored with it. Last night I finally finished watching it because I never leave a film unfinished, but it was a hard slog.

I read reviews on the intertubes about this and most were glowing saying it is one of the best films of the year, blah blah blah. I found it quite dull and just plain awful to watch. It had all the Lynch trappings such as quirky acting, weird creatures, the red drapes, and so forth and such like. There were a few scenes which were mildly interesting, but over all I couldn’t wait for it to end, which it did sooner as I had it on double playback speed.

I read someone’s interpretation of the film and it made sense, but I am still not impressed.

Maybe I am completely missing something, or I have no imagination whatsoever, but there is just too much going on and it is just too much to try and figure out at any one time for it to be watchable. Perhaps watching too many Hollywood films has numbed my mind.

Date finished: July30th
Score: 2/10
Film count 2014: 86
